Introduction
I am Jose Anthony Gutierrez, a student at UT Arlington. I’ve always been very close with my grandfather. He played an important role in making me the person I am today. He is a creative man who always pushed me to follow in his steps. I have vivid memories of him bringing instruments home and encouraging me to play them, I remember him teaching me how to draw and paint, I remember him teaching me about the little projects he’d work on. He always treated me like an equal and never like a child and his influence on me was reflected in my love of art.
Throughout my whole childhood, I found myself dabbling in art, mainly drawing and writing, but I also found myself trying things like painting and crafts. Now that I am older, I’ve found a love for film and photography, things that I always thought were cool growing up, but never able to get into due to the cost.
I’m using college as an opportunity to learn about various art forms and learn more about film, as all these things can help me master my craft and become a better artist. I feel that I’ve done that so far, and I’m expressing my creativity now more than ever thanks to the various classes and assignments I’ve worked on in college. I will continue to do this and strive to become an amazing filmmaker one day.
Themes and Ideas
I’ve always seen art as a way to create your own reality or reflect the one you live in. Every person sees the world differently and the beauty of art is that anyone can be an artist, therefore, it can take on many forms and represent different realities, ideas, or beliefs. It is also very important because it influences us in our daily lives and can help some people through very rough times.
Most of my work is lighthearted and seeks to bring joy or wonder to the people that view it. Some of my biggest inspirations for filmmaking come from films I watched growing up, films like Spider-Man, Cars, Grown Ups, and Under the Same Moon. Most of these films have a lighthearted tone and tell stories about overcoming obstacles, exploring new worlds, and the beauty of friendships and family. These are the sort of things I want to explore in my films.
End Goal
The ultimate goal with my art is to entertain people and bring them joy. I feel that that is the most beautiful thing about art, it can bring people together and allow them to share a moment. They can discuss the things they love or the things they hate about it. The times I feel the most joy is when I snap a photo of my family and show it to them and see a smile come to their face or when I show my friends a film I made or video I edited, and we talk about it. Being able to do this on a bigger scale and seeing people connect with my art and enjoy it as well would be a great accomplishment that would bring me a lot of joy.
